Mossy Church

Let’s hear it from Sky, With Earth joining in, And a huge round of applause from Sea. Let Wilderness turn cartwheels, Animals, come dance, Put every tree of the forest in the choir.
— Psalm 96:11-13 (The Message)

What is Mossy church?

The ethos behind Mossy church is to encourage children to encounter God through his creation. The forest school movement has shown that children benefit from learning outdoors, through improving their wellbeing, health and confidence. Doing church outdoors allows us to learn more about God through the rhythms of nature, to understand more about our place in His creation and find practical ways to care for it.

What happens at Mossy Church?

This is an example of how a Mossy Church Sunday will run.

What should I bring for Mossy church?

Please do bring outdoor clothing and always bring something extra in case it is wet or cold. Wellies and a hat are always a good idea in Scotland!

We would welcome any donations of children’s gardening gloves, small gardening tools, watering cans, picnic blankets and spare outdoor clothing e.g. wellies or waterproofs.

What about the weather?

Whatever the weather, mossy church will go on! We can learn so much outdoor in all seasons and in weather. Remember to bring appropriate clothing and that will help the children keep warm and dry.

“Encouraging a child to go outside in all weather builds resilience, but more importantly it saves them from spending their life merely tolerating the “bad” days in favour of a handful of “good” ones – a life of endless expectations and conditions where happiness hinges on sunshine.” Nicolette Sowder
